Earlier Apple Crops can help Apple Growers and the Cider Industry
Nine Pin Ciderworks and Samascott Orchards in Kinderhook are highlighting this year’s early apple crops, and invite the media to come learn how an early apple crop helps growers, and cidermakers alike. Media is invited to Samascott Orchards on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
The earliest apples that growers can harvest are usually the less tastier varieties that also do not store well. However, the Gala apple, now ranked the #1 variety in the nation, after Red Delicious dominated for more than five decades, is harvesting a week or two earlier than usual. In fact, many crops are up to two weeks earlier this year because spring came so early this year, and New York farmers didn’t suffer any spring frost.
And while an earlier harvest may or may not entice fall-lovers to the orchard because it’s still so warm, the early harvest does help the cider industry by extending the production cycle.
Alejandro del Peral and Jake Samascott will be available to discuss how these changes in the growth cycle this year will affect their industries–and how the two industries can amplify one another.
